Detox, Sleep, and Supplements: What Works and What Doesn’t

In this week’s episode of the Sleep Like a Boss podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Judy Seeger, a renowned expert in longevity and detoxification.

Judy Seeger is a traditional naturopath whose expertise lies in all things detox, earning her the title of the "Detox Queen" in holistic wellness circles. Specializing in detox methods that include foods, therapies, and lifestyle practices, as well as natural immune boosters, Judy has spent over twenty years immersed in the Cancer and Autoimmune communities. Her extensive experience has equipped her with a deep understanding of what truly works in natural therapies.

Judy’s mission now is to bring hope to those worried about aging disease. As a woman in her sixties she knows the concerns that happen with women in the aging process.  One of her main areas of focus is aging skin related issues such as psoriasis to blotchy skin to crepey, saggy skin Judy has found detoxing to be extremely effective.

With her extensive background in traditional naturopathy and decades of experience, Judy shared invaluable insights on how to enhance our health as we age, emphasizing the crucial connection between detoxification, longevity, and sleep.

The Link Between Aging, Detoxification, and Health

As we age, many of us become increasingly concerned about our health and longevity. Judy highlighted a fascinating statistic: while women tend to live longer than men, their health often declines significantly around the age of 69. This decline can lead to chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis, all of which severely impact quality of life. However, the good news is that we can take proactive steps to improve our health and longevity, starting as early as our 40s.

One of the simplest yet most effective ways to begin this journey is through detoxification. Judy emphasized that our bodies are exposed to an increasing number of chemicals in our environment, which can accumulate over time and negatively affect our health. Without regular detoxification, these toxins can lead to fatigue, brain fog, poor digestion, and even chronic diseases.

The Power of Sweating as a Detox Tool

A natural and effective detox method is sweating. According to Judy, just 30 minutes of sweating each day—whether through exercise, sauna sessions, or even a detox bath—can help eliminate harmful toxins from our bodies. Sweating supports the skin, which is the body's largest elimination organ, in removing accumulated waste.

For those who find it challenging to exercise daily, alternatives like infrared saunas or Epsom salt baths can be excellent options. These methods not only help with detoxification but also promote relaxation and improve sleep quality, which is essential for overall well-being.

Creating a Detox Routine

Beyond daily detox habits, Judy discussed the importance of setting aside dedicated detox periods. She recommends implementing a three-to-seven-day detox regimen a few times a year to give the body a chance to reset. This can include:

  • Increasing water intake to flush out toxins

  • Consuming detoxifying foods such as leafy greens, beets, and lemons

  • Using herbal teas to support liver and kidney function

  • Prioritizing rest and sleep during the detox period

Many people mistake fasting for detoxing, but Judy clarified the difference. While fasting can have benefits, it does not necessarily equate to detoxification. True detoxification involves actively supporting the liver, kidneys, colon, and lymphatic system in eliminating toxins.

The Role of Community in Longevity

One of the most surprising aspects of our conversation was the role of social connections in longevity. Judy pointed out that loneliness and isolation can significantly impact health, particularly as we age. Studies have shown that people who have strong social ties tend to live longer and healthier lives than those who are socially isolated.

In today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world, we often overlook the importance of human connection. Judy encouraged listeners to prioritize social interactions, whether that means joining a local group, attending events, or simply staying in touch with friends and family. These relationships provide emotional support, reduce stress, and even have physiological benefits, such as lowering blood pressure and boosting the immune system.

Debunking Myths Around Detox Supplements

As the conversation neared its conclusion, Judy addressed a common misconception: the reliance on detox supplements and kits. While many products on the market claim to offer a “quick fix” for detoxification, she cautioned against using them as a substitute for proper nutrition and lifestyle choices.

Detoxification should be a holistic process that includes:

  • Eating whole, nutrient-dense foods

  • Staying hydrated

  • Engaging in regular physical activity

  • Managing stress effectively

  • Getting adequate sleep

Rather than chasing the latest detox trends, Judy advises individuals to focus on foundational health practices that naturally support detoxification.
