Does heat destroy your sleep?

Today we're going to talk about the heat or how to be cooler.

We do love summer; it's warm, it's sunny. We have ice cream. We can go and have a swim. In general, we cope better in summer than during winter because the days are longer. But the heat can also drive us nuts when it comes to good sleep. So, with

Does heat destroy your sleep,

I'm going to share three things you can do in order to get better sleep and be cooler.

  1. I know it seems so obvious, yet so many people shy away from it – is to invest in air conditioning, my friends. You would be surprised how many people don't even want to splurge on getting a fan. I have to say, my life has changed since I got my air conditioner. In Europe, it's more difficult to build them inside the house because we have all these energy-saving things, so houses are built a little differently. But I have a mobile air conditioning unit that I can just roll around, and I bring my room down to a nice, cool temperature before I go to bed.  I don't keep it running throughout the night because it's a little too loud if I do, but if it's crazy hot, then I wear earplugs. It makes the biggest difference. I swear, your summers will never be the same. You won't be tossing and turning for hours in the heat. It's just the biggest relief. It's the best investment I've made in a long time. So get some air-con, people. It's just for summer, so don't use it mindlessly, don't use it when you're not in the room, but literally an hour or so before you go to bed, cool the room down.

  2. If you're still too stingy to get some air conditioning, do the following: take a towel, get it a bit wet, and put it into your freezer at least one or two hours before you go to sleep. Then, when you take it out, put it underneath your feet or your head to get a cooling sensation that can help you to fall asleep. You’ll feel better and it won't be quite as warm in the middle of the night.

  3. Change your bedding. I love a good down duvet, and I know they say that you can also use them in summer (and I sometimes do), but if it's super, super, super, super, super hot, I like to use just a couple of sheets. The reason I'm saying a couple is that I do like to have some weight, so I really recommend going with layers. Have a couple of sheets, have a blanket but don't go for the big duvet ones. Try to find a blanket that's just right for you. Sometimes it can also be enough just to have a heavier blanket on your feet to have that sensation of weight. That will also make a difference.  Those sheets should ideally be linen, which is nice and airy, or cotton, but stay away from synthetic fabrics. They will just make you sweat even more.

Those are just three little things that I can recommend for how to be cooler and help you with the heat. Of course, giving your feet a cold rinse also helps the body temperature to come down. So, have a try. I know some of these things are obvious, but they need to be said out loud so people can hear it!

I'm wishing you a beautiful rest of the summer and if you want more sleep tips, remember to check out our blog page!
