Mattress tips for insomniacs

Having a good mattress is crucial for the quality of our sleep and for our overall health, considering that we spend a third of our life sleeping on them. Here is the cold, hard truth of buying a mattress - it is entirely individual. But, there are a couple of things that I can help you with.

Mattress Buying Guide

Mattress Budget

The important thing to keep in mind is that a more expensive mattress does not always mean that it's better for you. If you really want to make an investment, contact the company that makes the mattresses that you want to try out and see if they have some in hotel rooms (sometimes they’ll even sponsor you a night). That way, you can test drive it for a night, because if you go into a shop, you are lying there all stiff because you are being watched, you are completely exposed, your nervous system kicks in, and you will not be in the same position as when you're actually sleeping at nighttime. There are also companies who offer you to test it out for a few days at home, so make sure you look more into that.

Mattress Selection

There are some things that you should take into consideration when choosing your mattress.

  • Look for certain certifications that are accepted worldwide.

  • Make sure that there are no toxic fumes developing because you are going to sleep on it, for the next     (ideally) 10 years.

  • You want to flip your mattress every 6 months and change it every 10 years if possible

  • Make sure that your mattress helps with your body temperature because a foam mattress that doesn't     help with ventilation can be quite unhelpful.

So, make sure that you check those boxes, but the rest of it is totally individual. Does your mattress have different zones, can you change those zones, is the mattress too firm, what is it made of? - all those choices depend on your personal preference. Keep in mind that if anyone who hasn't met you and doesn't know your preferences, promises you the perfect mattress without you having tried it, is just being dishonest.
