Why does our brain need sleep?

Why do we sleep?

This is something I get asked a lot, and the answer is that there are so many different reasons, but today I want to focus on, arguably, our most important organ - our brain.

The function of our brain related to sleep

Every second, every nanosecond while we are awake and conscious, we are making decisions, our brain coordinates with our heart, with our lungs, etc. Our brain is doing a lot to keep everything else functioning properly and just like a car produces fumes in order to function.  Our body produces different toxins and we get toxic buildup. At nighttime, we have our “cleaning crew” come in and clean up those toxins, and make sure that we are as refreshed as possible the next day. Unfortunately, they are not 100% successful (that would make us immortal) but the difference is that if we don't get enough sleep, if the “cleaning crew” doesn’t do what it's supposed to, we are going to age a lot quicker. That might be the last kind of indicator that you should really prioritize sleep.

However, if you are on the other end of the spectrum and you're someone who really wants to sleep but can’t, don't worry - you're not going to die tomorrow. But because sleep is taking care of your main “repairs”, don’t underestimate it and make sure that you investigate every possible route that you can.

Obviously, we would love to help you over here at Sleep Like a Boss, and do also browse the blog.  There are a lot of helpful articles there, and just take a look at what is out there.

If you feel that we resonate with you, then have a quick look at our website and my team, and reach out. We would love to talk to you and see if we are someone who could help you with your sleep issues. I also highly recommend to read the book Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams  by Matthew Walker.
